Unfortunately in the new series being shown here in Britain (December 2012)it seems as if the cheap laugh writers have arrived. Four people a playing a game that entails putting their faces into fruit pies so their eyes, nose etc are completely covered in the fruit filling. I was googling "fight choreograp...Nice review! I was googling "fight choreography screenwriting" and stumbled across this post. I'm a little over halfway through the book and am really enjoying it as a screenwriter who has practiced a martial art for a couple years and is writing an action script.

First, this is one of the best filmmaking books I've ever read on one of the coolest topics by a professional expert with a depth and passion which shines through on every page. I cannot say how much I enjoy reading this book both as a fan of cinema and as a writer. The graph and deconstruction of the acts of a fight are more than worth the price of purchase and provide some of the most practical and effective advice for properly structuring a scene I've seen in a book - all while actually being geared toward an audience of aspiring choreographers, providing exercises any writer would benefit from executing.

Having said that, I think your criticisms are valid (though I'm reading the Kindle edition so glad I didn't miss a DVD!). The examples are a little much and I'm wanting a section as you describe with movements and applications. However, I thought the book included an excellent glossary which provided an expert vocabulary.

However, the book assumes some understanding of fighting and I think it's important for inexperienced readers (especially action writers) to take a self-defense class as part of the learning process with the book in order to fully learn moves and their applications. Having said that, my knowledge is much more limited than the author's and any discussion would be appreciated. That would actually be an interesting series for a blog - moves and their most classic applications. Maybe there's room for a sequel because I'd surely buy it.

And 500 pages, wow. On the Kindle, I had no idea. Guess I should finish my 90 page white-space filled screenplay...

Thanks again for the great post and I look forward to exploring your site!Samhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01685290500527780145noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4918706045118360948.post-17473631061453607042010-11-28T17:18:45.693+01:002010-11-28T17:18:45.693+01:00Make it so...Make it so...Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4918706045118360948.post-62551001710711886402010-07-22T15:44:51.382+02:002010-07-22T15:44:51.382+02:00Green Lantern has been my favorite hero since ever...Green Lantern has been my favorite hero since ever, and anything will make me feel happier than a Green Lantern movie, it's definitely one of my dreams.viagra onlinehttp://www.safemeds.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4918706045118360948.post-81034484312876104522010-06-22T05:40:21.141+02:002010-06-22T05:40:21.141+02:00Only character I can think of who broke this rule ...Only character I can think of who broke this rule (twice!) and then lived is Lando Calrissian in Star Wars:The Empire Strikes Back.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4918706045118360948.post-29427369500760070552010-06-19T10:31:22.400+02:002010-06-19T10:31:22.400+02:00I'm a huge fan of Emily Blunt. Ever since I heard she's going to take part in the film, I borrowed the novel by Paul Torday from our local library and finished reading it in no time. The more I read, the more I wondered how it would be made into a film? It's kind of a little sad but lovely small book. It's original and fresh - but it certainly puts the mainstream audience on the wrong foot and this doesn't go unpunished.

After that, I didn't really have too many issues with the film and found it provided sufficient suspension of disbelief to counteract the (indeed quite striking) plot holes.Karelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01894787076761192228noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4918706045118360948.post-37343758536967502852010-04-15T14:34:58.082+02:002010-04-15T14:34:58.082+02:00Excellent review of "WARHEAD." Indeed, w...Excellent review of "WARHEAD." Indeed, when I first received (very covertly, by the way) my copy of the script in 1978---while in Ireland, attempting to find Kevin McClory, I was surprised at "just how good the story really was." I was broke, at the time, and looking for job on "Warhead," in the event McClory, actually, succeeded in taking it to the big screen.(2.) After meeting with Sean Connery's agent, Dennis Selinger in London in the offices of 'International Creative Management,' it soon became clear that "WARHEAD" was a long way from ever getting made. (3.) in 1992, Jack Schwartzman, producer of McClory's "THUNDERBALL" remake, "NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN," told me in Los Angeles that "WARHEAD was just too dangerous to make from a litigation point-of-view." When McClory offered the "Warhead" story to Lorimar Pictures, it was their entertainment attorney, Jack Schwartzman who saw the script first. "I decided to produce a McClory owned Bond script, but 'Warhead' was a minefield ready to blow-up in any producer's face." (4.) Schwartzman checked McClory's 'chain-of-title' in London, and went through the British court system to insure that McClory's rights in a "Thunderball" remake were secure. They were. (5.) When asked why he was not interested in doing a follow-up film to "Never Say Never Again," Schwartzman was quick to say: "My wife, Talia Shire, and I mortgaged our homes to get 'Never Say Never Again' made, and thank God, it was a success. But, to do another film?...Sean meant it when he said 'never again...' and we had sold his last Bond picture territory-by-territory to exibitors throughout the world on the basis of his participation as 007. Though McClory had licenced me to do a second film, I felt that without Sean, there was no point...he was the lightning rod that drew the money and the audiences around the globe." (6.) Bond McClory trivia: For a very brief interlude after the success of 'Never Say Never Again,' Schwartzman said he did seriously consider casting 'Tom Selleck' as James Bond 007. However, I always felt that Vogler's treatment of it was a bit messy and superficial. The seeds of a great tool for understanding and telling stories was there, but in order for it to be meaningful and applicable for screenwriters, it needed a lot more work - and Cunningham's book seems to do a lot of that work. Cunningham sees that it is not so much the individual plot steps of the hero's journey as it is their function as elements of a metaphor for personal growth that we should be focusing on, when we apply them to screenwriting.
And that is exactly the perspective on the hero's journey I'd been hoping to find explored in so many other screenwriting books before this one came along.
In this book, we also find out exactly how the mythic structure differs from the dramatic structure of screenplays, and we find the precise, psychologically insightful concept of the main character's "mode", which I think will eventually prove to be very influential in story development.

As you said, it is not a light read, and it will take quite a while for me to digest all of it, but so far, it has been immensely rewarding.

Michael E.
